Prevention and Treatment of Hyperpigmentation

/  Beauty   /  Prevention and Treatment of Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is probably the most dreaded and annoying skin care concern for most people around the world, and for the right reasons. No matter age or gender, we all strive for healthy and flawless skin without having to worry about concealing any imperfections. That’s why every skincare routine focuses on improving the skin tone and texture to give you a smooth and radiant complexion. Myanmar being a tropical country, puts its residents at a higher risk of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Melasma, freckles, and sunspots are some of the most common problems among Myanmar people. Treating and preventing hyperpigmentation can be a laborious task if you fail to find the right products. Today, we’ll help you choose the right skin care products to fight pesky hyperpigmentation.

What Causes Dark Spots?

In order to treat hyperpigmentation effectively, you need to have the proper knowledge of the causes of your problem and the extent of the damage. Hyperpigmentation is basically caused by the overproduction of melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) in the body. The excessive release of melanin is triggered by a myriad of reasons. Here are the common reasons that contribute to the increased production of melanocytes:

  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Genetics
  • Sun damage
  • Age
  • Inflammation

Treatment of Hyperpigmentation

Luckily, many brands are dedicated to providing skin care products with active ingredients that help to minimize and treat hyperpigmentation. Look for skin care products containing any of the following ingredients:

  • Vitamin C

This powerful vitamin isn’t only an excellent natural antioxidant, but also offers incredible skin lightening properties. Vitamin C works by reducing the production of melanin in the body. Melanin is the pigment responsible for all kind of skin discoloration, including hyperpigmentation. The protective abilities of vitamin C shield the skin from oxidative damage and prevent future hyperpigmentation. It also boosts collagen production, helping to reduce skin discoloration and damage already done.

  • Niacinamide

It is the active form of niacin or vitamin B3, which water-soluble and often used in water-based serums and moisturizers. Niacinamide is an excellent antioxidant and skin lightening ingredient that has been proven effective in treating melasma, pigmentation, and age spots.  Niacinamide is non-irritating and non-acidic in nature, making it specifically suitable for those with inflamed, sensitive, or oily skin.

  • Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is the relatively gentler and more widely used treatment for lightening hyperpigmentation. Kojic acid also acts to inhibit the activity of pigment cells, melanocytes, in the skin. It’s often used in combination with hydroquinone to enhance its effect. But if you have sensitive skin that’s allergic to hydroquinone, you can use a product only containing kojic acid. You may have to wait a little longer to see the results, but your patience will be worth it.

  • Retinol

Retinol is known as a magic potion for various skin care concerns, including dark spots and hyperpigmentation. There is hardly any dermatologist and skin care professional who doesn’t have a retinol product in their vanity. Retinol is widely used to treat acne, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and signs of aging. So, no matter what caused your hyperpigmentation, retinol is the best bet for you.

  • Sunblock

Do we really need to say it? There is a reason sunblock is the most reiterated skin care product. Environmental factors, UV rays, in particular, are the most common culprit behind melasma, freckles, and of course, sunspots. UV rays trigger the over-production of melanin in the skin. It is advised to apply and reapply a broad-spectrum sunblock every day to prevent and treat sun damage. Look for lotion, cream or gel with SPF 30 or above, according to your skin type.

  • Aesthetic Procedures

It’s important to note that you may need to consult a dermatologist if none of the OTC treatments seem to be working. Together you can discuss other treatment options and cosmetic procedures like chemical peels, laser therapy, micro needling, and microdermabrasion. Usually, 3-8 sessions are enough to reduce pigmentation and reveal glowing and clear complexion underneath.
